The Physics of Mirror Reflection

A flat mirror reflects light by reversing the depth axis — it bounces photons back along the perpendicular to its surface. For a person standing face-on, this has the visual effect of swapping left and right. Raise your right hand in front of a mirror and the reflection raises its left hand.

Crucially, this reversal is not a rotation; it is a reflection. A "true mirror" (two flat mirrors joined at 90 degrees) eliminates this reversal and shows you the same image that other people see. MirrorMe achieves the same result digitally.

How Selfie Cameras Mirror Your Image

When you open your phone’s front camera, the live preview is displayed as a mirror image so the experience feels intuitive — you move right, the preview moves right, just like a mirror. Depending on your phone’s settings, the saved photo may be the mirrored or the non-mirrored version, which creates confusion about what you "really" look like.

Additionally, front cameras typically use wide-angle lenses with focal lengths around 24–28mm equivalent. At arm’s length, this introduces barrel distortion: features close to the lens (your nose, forehead) appear larger, while features near the edges (ears, jawline) get compressed or stretched.

What MirrorMe Does to Your Photo

Our tool applies up to three transformations, all running entirely in your browser:

  1. Horizontal flip.We reverse the image along the vertical axis to produce the non-mirrored view — the same face your friends, family, and colleagues see when they look at you.
  2. Barrel distortion correction. Using a radial distortion model with two coefficients (k1 and k2), we remap every pixel to counteract the barrel effect of wide-angle lenses. The result is closer to what a 50mm portrait lens would capture.
  3. Lighting enhancement. We perform luminance range normalisation and a gentle contrast stretch so that selfies taken in uneven lighting (a common issue with front-facing flash) look more balanced and natural.

Do I need to install anything?
No. MirrorMe is a web application that runs in any modern browser. There is nothing to download or install.
Does this work with group photos?
MirrorMe flips and corrects the entire image, so it works best with single-person selfies or portraits. Group photos will be processed correctly, but the lens correction is tuned for typical selfie distances.
Why does my true face look "wrong" to me?
You have spent your entire life seeing the mirrored version of your face. Psychological research calls this the "mere exposure effect" — you prefer what you see most often. The non-mirrored face is unfamiliar to you but perfectly normal to everyone else.
How accurate is the lens distortion correction?
Our correction uses a standard radial distortion model that approximates the barrel distortion of typical front-facing phone cameras. It produces a noticeably more natural result for standard selfie distances (arm’s length). For extreme close-ups or non-standard lenses, results may vary.
