The Science of Mirror Reflection

When you stand in front of a mirror, you see a reversed image of yourself. Your left hand appears on the right side of the reflection, and vice versa. This lateral inversion happens because a mirror reflects light along the axis perpendicular to its surface — it reverses depth (front-to-back), which our brains interpret as a left-right swap.

Because no human face is perfectly symmetrical — one eye may sit slightly higher, a nostril may be wider, a smile may lean to one side — the mirrored version of your face that you are accustomed to seeing is subtly different from the version that everyone else sees when they look at you directly.

How Selfie Cameras Distort Your Face

Front-facing phone cameras add another layer of complexity. Most phones display a mirrored preview while you frame the shot so that the experience feels like a mirror. Many then save the flipped (true) image, creating a disconnect between what you saw on screen and what ends up in your camera roll.

On top of that, front cameras use wide-angle lenses with short focal lengths. At close range, these lenses produce barrel distortion that exaggerates central features (like your nose) while stretching the edges. This is why selfies can look noticeably different from photos taken by someone else with a rear camera from a few feet away.

  • No image data is ever uploaded to, transmitted to, or stored on any server.
  • When you close or refresh the tab, your image is removed from memory.
  • We do not use analytics trackers that can identify you. The only third-party script is Google AdSense for ad placement, which may use cookies in accordance with Google’s privacy policy.
